This is a free translation of a Marathi poem ’Nirmalya’  by a very popular Marathi poet ‘Sandeep Khare’)

The Night

This is how the night passes.
At the beginning wife screams.
At midnight dog barks.
At dawn the cuckoo sings
and in the morning
the milkman knocks.

This is how the night passes.
At the beginning I remember a poem.
At midnight I dream of my sweetheart.
At dawn the youngest wets the bed
and in the morning I remember
the pill that I had forgotten to take

This is how the night passes.
At the beginning night is whiskey.
At midnight  it sobers to become prose.
At dawn night moves into poetry
and in the morning
I wake up again in the present.

This is how the night passes.
At the beginning the night is a bud.
At midnight bud desires to be a flower.
At dawn bud becomes a flower
and in the morning
before I touch the flower

it drops down in the mud.
